    Event marks scheme completion

A ceremony took place on Friday (25 November) to mark the completion of the M60 Palatine Road bridge repair scheme.

The project started in 2019 and involved repairing 15 bridge piers. Thanks to the engineering method that was carried out during the project, we completed our work nearly a year ahead of schedule.

This resulted in the scheme saving around £8million and removed 64 closures of the M60 from the original programme, reducing the impact of the project on road users.

The scheme completion event involved tree planting, followed by a community thank you event at Withington Golf Club.

As part of the project we’ve completed a series of improvements to site. This includes replacing trees and providing accessible picnic tables for the local community to enjoy the riverside location.

Caption: Attendees at the event included the National Highways project team, our principal contractor Balvac, sub-contractors and Manchester City Council

We have also worked closely with the community throughout. This has involved donating money and equipment to the Woodhouse Park Family Centre in Wythenshawe.

The local charity works to improve the lives of children, young people and families. The donations have given the charity a kickstart in their efforts to fundraise £150k to buy their building.

We would like to thank customers for their continued patience whilst we carried out these essential repairs to Palatine Road bridge.

    Scheme nearing completion

We would like to thank customers for their continued patience while we repair the M60 Palatine Road bridge.

Work has been progressing well and we are pleased to confirm that the current planned scheme completion date is Monday 21 November 2022. This is almost a year ahead of schedule.

The structure, which carries the M60 over Palatine Road and the River Mersey, needed extensive repairs to 15 bridge piers.

The project carried out an engineering method that shaved months off the schedule and saved around £8million. It also reduced the impact of the scheme on road users by removing 64 closures of the M60 from the programme.

The repairs mean the bridge will not require any significant work for around 25 years.

    Progress update

We're continuing to repair the bridge piers. So far, we've completed repairs to 11 out of the 15 piers. The repairs to the remaining 4 piers has also started. See below the latest progress plan:

Most of our work will take place underneath the bridge and will not affect motorists on Palatine Road or the M60. However, there will be occasions when we need to install temporary traffic management to enable delivery of materials or movement of construction vehicles.

Any restrictions to traffic will be limited to off-peak hours only. Details of any planned restrictions will be clearly displayed on site in advance.

Our phasing programme has changed. Phase 3 will now focus on piers number 15 and 6 and is due to start April 2020. This will take underneath the bridge, as per the other pier repairs.

    Ongoing bridge pier work

Bridge pier repair work is ongoing to pier numbers 17 and 18 (see our phase map for more information). We’ve completed the operation to lift the bridge from the two piers. Temporary structures to support the motorway are in place, allowing the repair work to the concrete piers to continue. This phase of work will be ongoing until September 2020.

To carry out the repairs safely, we need to close the footpath/cycleway on the eastern bank of the River Mersey. The closure will be in place from November 2019 until the work is complete. A localised signed pedestrian diversion route will be in place.

Please note that Palatine Road will remain open throughout.

Overview

The M60 is one of the busiest motorways in the North West. These repairs will ensure that motorists continue to experience safe and reliable journeys along this part of the network. The work is taking place below the bridge deck, so traffic will not be affected.

So far, we have completed repairs to two bridge piers with another 13 to complete over the next four years.

To carry out the work safely, we need to close the footpath/ cycleway on the eastern bank of the River Mersey (shown in red on the map). The closure will be in place from September 2019 until the work is complete.
