East - Road maintenance work

We're doing emergency resurfacing work on the A1(M) southbound between junctions 10 (Stotfold Service Area Interchange) and 6 (Welwyn).

We recently closed a lane on the A1(M) between Stevenage and Welwyn that allowed us to resolve a particular issue. But our resurfacing now will repair some wider problems with the road in this area. The resurfacing work will ensure the A1(M) is again safe and serviceable for drivers, with all lanes open again. 

Work on the southbound carriageway begins today, Monday 15 April, and is expected to be completed by Monday 29 April 2024.

To carry out the work safely we will need to fully close the A1(M) in the direction that we are working on. Work will be carried out overnight on weeknights only, between 9pm and 5am. 

Work will start first on the A1(M) southbound between junctions 8 (Stevenage north) and 7 (Stevenage south A602) from Monday 15 April to Thursday 18 April. Drivers will exit at junction 8 to take the A602 southbound, then take Gunnels Wood Road southbound through Stevenage, then take the A602 to return to the A1(M) at junction 7.

On Friday 19 April and Monday 22 April we will be working between junctions 7 (Stevenage south A602) and 6 (Welwyn). Drivers will exit at junction 7 to take the A602 eastbound, then take B197 London Road southbound through Knebworth to take A1000 Welwyn Bypass to re-join the A1(M) at junction 6. From Tues

day 23 April to Monday 29 April we will be working between junctions 10 (Stotfold) and 8 (Stevenage north). Drivers will exit at junction 10 to take the A507 westbound onto Arlesey Road, then taker A600 Hitchin Road and Bedford Road southbound through Hitchin, then continue east on the A602 to return to the A1(M) at junction 8.

We will return to complete work on the northbound section soon afterwards, which will take around 2 to 3 weeks, and we will let you know more info closer to the time.

Following several occurrences of flooding at Honingham last November, over 40m of new pipe has been laid and a portion of garden wall has been taken down and rebuilt. A nearby tree – which was causing root damage to the pipe – has also been removed.

While this work has helped to improve the situation, National Highways understands the frustration for motorists when flooding occurs.

Previously, measures were taken to mitigate flooding risks at Honingham, which included the use of HGV tankers to pump the water.

However, an upcoming closure scheduled for this weekend has been postponed due to delays in the arrival of the bespoke tanks coming from Europe, where they have been manufactured.

To continue progress on the flood prevention measures, preparatory work will be conducted this week and next until the arrival of the new tanks, which will require a subsequent closure for their installation as previously advised.

We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused to local people. We will continue to monitor the situation and communicate via press and social media about the dates for the work.

Emergency closure A1(M) between junctions 6 and 7

Since 21 March, we’ve been carrying out urgent and immediate safety investigations on the A1(M) northbound between junctions 6 (The Clock, Welwyn) and 7 (Langley Sidings/Stevenage South) to determine the full extent of the significant safety defect and to ensure the safety of all road users. 

Our team has taken 45 core samples of the road between 5m and 18m deep. Each 5m cores takes about 1 hour to probe the core and then reinstate it. The team is currently finalising a solution to rectify the defect. 

Closures 

The A1M northbound carriageway will be completely closed between junctions 6 and 7, starting from 9pm on Thursday 28th March 2024 until 6am on Saturday 30th March. 

On the A1M Southbound, the lane 2 only will be closed this Thursday 28 March overnight  from 9pm to 6am. 

Once completed we will be able to fully reopen the road.

Diversions.

Whilst the A1(M) is closed, traffic will be diverted from the A1(M) northbound at junction 6, onto the A1000 Welwyn Bypass Road then onto the B197 Great North Road, towards Knebworth. Follow the B197 to the A602 Monkswood Way Roundabout and then take the first exit onto the A602 before rejoining the A1(M) at junction 7.

Drivers should allow extra time for their journeys and follow the official signed diversion route.

Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer, smoother and better-defined road surface. 

We plan to complete this work over 13 nights between Monday 4 March and Monday 18 March 2024, including the weekend of Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 March. We will work between 10pm and 5am, weather conditions permitting.  

Closures and diversions 

To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the M1 southbound between junctions 14 and 13.

Drivers will be diverted off the M1 at junction 14 onto the H6 Childs Way (A509) to Fox Milne Roundabout. At the roundabout take the first exit onto the A4146 (Tongwell Street). At Standing Way Roundabout take the first exit onto the A421 before rejoining the M1 at junction 13.

We’re planning on resurfacing of a small section of the A47 westbound, east of Walton Highway Roundabout. Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer, smoother and better-defined road surface.

We plan to complete this work over five nights from Monday 11 March 2024. We will work between 8pm and 6am on weeknights only, weather conditions permitting.

Closures and diversions

To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the dualled section of A47 westbound between Terrington St John and Walton Highway roundabout.

Traffic will be diverted from A47 westbound at Terrington St John to take Church Lane, Main Road/Lynn Road, before re-joining the A47 westbound at Walton Highway Roundabout.

We plan to carry out essential safety improvement works on the A47 Acle Straight, just outside Vauxhall Holiday Park, between Acle and Great Yarmouth.

The work will include road markings and resurfacing the carriageway. 

Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer, smoother and better-defined road surface and will ensure the A47 continues to remain in a safe and serviceable condition.

During November 2023, we iesurfaced parts of the A47, just outside of Vauxhall Holiday Park.

We need to revisit the area to undertake some more work to bring the surface of the road up to the required standard. 

We plan to complete this work over five nights between Monday 18 March and Friday 22 March 2024.  

We will work between 8pm and 6am on weeknights only, weather conditions permitting.   

Diversion 

Whilst the A47 is closed, eastbound traffic will be diverted from the A47 at Trowse Newton to travel southbound on the A146. Traffic will then join the A143 at Gillingham to re-join the A47 at Beccles Road, A47 interchange. 

Traffic heading westbound will follow the same diversion as above but in reverse.  

As part of our effort to cut carbon emissions from road lighting, we’re upgrading street lighting to LED lights which are more efficient and greener. We'll be changing to LED lights at M1 junction 9 (Watery Lane) from Friday 22 March 2024 to Friday 29 March 2024.   

LED lights are better for the environment because:

• they use far less energy to produce the same amount of light as conventional lamps
• they last longer and require less maintenance, meaning fewer road closures for repairs.

Diversion route

We will be doing essential structure maintenance, including resurfacing, bridge joints repair and road marking on the A14 westbound between junctions 55 to 54. This will ensure the A14 continues to remain in a safe and serviceable condition.

Closures 

To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the A14 westbound between junctions 55 and 54 over 5 nights between Monday 19 and Saturday 24 February 2024. We will work between 8pm and 6am, including Saturday, weather permitting.

Diversions

Drivers will leave the A14 at the junction 55 westbound exit slip road at the Copdock Interchange. At the interchange, take the third exit onto the A1214 and turn left on to A1071 to the Swan Hill Roundabout. At the roundabout take the third exit onto the B1133 and continue on the B1133 through Sproughton and Bramford before re-joining to A14 at junction 52.

We have worked with Sproughton Parish Council to reduce the impact of traffic passing through Sproughton village.

We are introducing temporary four-way traffic signals at the High Street. Signs will remind drivers of the speed limit and that they are in a residential area.

Additionally, we will place three safety camera vans at key locations to monitor vehicle speeds. We will also install air quality and noise monitoring equipment for a period of two weeks.

During February, a lorry overturned, went through the central reservation and and hit a bridge southbound between junction 21 and 22 at Witham in Essex, causing extensive damage. 

Due to the extent of the barrier damage caused by the collision, permanent repairs are needed before the A12 can be fully reopened.

The bridge has been inspected and is safe, but we have had to install temporary barriers whilst we do the repairs needed to the bridge column. 

There is currently a 50 mph speed restriction, which is the highest safe speed for road users based on our guidance.  

We apologise for any delays this may cause, and ask you to add an extra 10 minutes to your journey time. 

Specialist parts are needed to repair the barrier that will take some time to be manufactured. So we expect the speed restrictions and temporary safety barriers will be in place whilst we do the full bridge repairs.

We're refreshing the road markings on the A47 between Links Road Roundabout and Victoria Road Roundabout at Gorleston-on-Sea. Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer, better-defined road surface.

Unfortunately, due to contractor chain issues, this work has been postponed.

This work will now be rescheduled to a later date, to coordinate with other road works in the region. Once confirmed, we will confirm road closure dates.

Work will be carried out in phases, starting from Links Road Roundabout, moving northwards until work is complete at Victoria Road Roundabout.

Access to James Paget Hospital will remain open, either via Brasenose Avenue, Jenner Road or the main entrance. Temporary signs will be in place to advise of any alternative arrangements.

We are continuing our work to install a new drainage system on the A14 at junction 51. The westbound entry slip road to the A14 at junction 51 often floods with surface water during heavy rain. We are working to improve the stormwater drainage system to help the road cope with the risk of flooding. 

We’re adding extra drainage and soakaways. To do this, the verge will need be widened and other changes made. 

Once done, the road will be able to better disperse surface water and will be less prone to flooding.

To reduce the impact on the local area, we’re carrying out the work in three phases. Phases 1 and 2 are now complete.

Phase 3 - junction 51 westbound entry slip road closures from Thursday 4 January to Friday 2 February (22 nights) between 8pm and 6am.

Traffic wishing to join the A14 westbound will be diverted to follow Kettle Lane/B1078 towards Beacon Hill Interchange (junction 51) and join the A14 eastbound. Exit at junction 52, then re-join the A14 westbound.

We will be operating temporary 2-way traffic signals on Kettle Lane on Thursday 4 January to Friday 12 January (7 nights), between 8pm and 6am.

We plan to carry out resurfacing work on the A14 eastbound near junction 17, Leighton Bromswold junction between Thrapston and Brampton Hut. This will ensure the A14 continues to remain in a safe and serviceable condition.

We plan to complete this work over five nights, between Monday 22 January and Friday 26 January. Our work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am, weather permitting.

Closures and access

To safely carry out this work, we will be closing the A14 eastbound between junction 16, Catworth and junction 17, Leighton Bromswold.

During this work, local traffic will still be able to access the A14 eastbound between junctions 14 to 16, and junction 18 onwards.

Diversions

Motorway permitted traffic travelling eastbound will be diverted off the A14 at junction 13 (Thrapston) to join the A605 then the A1(M) at junction 17 and continue to Brampton Hut Interchange to re-join the A14 eastbound.

Any eastbound traffic not permitted for motorway use will be diverted off the A14 at junction 13 (Thrapston) onto the A605, Fletton Parkway and exit at junction 3 onto The Serpentine, A15 (London Road), B1043, A1307 and exit at junction 23 before joining the A141 to Brampton Hut Interchange to continue their journey.

We'll be upgrading to LED street lights, located on the A47 between junction 15 at Nene Parkway and junction 20 at Dogsthorpe roundabout in Peterborough.

Work will starts Monday 15 January and last two weeks, until 19 January. We’ll be working overnight from 8pm to 6am on weeknights only.

Closures and diversions  

To do this work, we need to close the A47 westbound between junctions 15 and 20 at Peterborough. 

Whilst the A47 is closed in any section between junctions 15 and 20, traffic will be diverted via Frank Perkins Parkway, Fletton Parkway and Nene Parkway.  

Future work

In the coming months, we will be upgrading LED streetlights on some entry/exit slip roads between junctions 15 and 20, as well as other locations between junction 20 and Thorney. Details of this work will be publicised once the dates are set.

We'll be resurfacing the M11 junction 10 southbound exit slip road (leading to the A505 and Duxford Imperial War Museum).

To carry out this work safely, we will need to close the M11 overnight as follows:

• M11 southbound between junctions 11 (Trumpington) and 10 (Duxford), Tuesday 28 November, between 10pm and 5am.
• M11 junction 10 southbound exit slip road, from Wednesday 29 November to Friday 1 December, between 10pm and 5am.

During these closures, southbound traffic will be directed to exit the M11 at junction 11 (Trumpington), take the A10 southwest to Royston, then the A505 to rejoin the M11 at junction 10.

We’re resurfacing the A5183 Dunstable Road roundabout by the M1 bridge at junction 9 (St Albans North for Flamstead, Harpenden and Herts County Showground). Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer and better-defined road surface.

We plan to complete this work over 4 nights on Monday 20 November, and then from Wednesday 22 November to Friday 24 November. We will work between 8pm and 6am on weeknights only, weather conditions permitting.

Closures and diversions

To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the A5183 (Dunstable Road) in both directions from Harpenden Lane roundabout heading on the west side of the M1, and the M1 junction 9 southbound exit slip road.

• Traffic wishing to exit the M1 southbound for Redbourn and Harpenden will continue to M1 junction 8 exit and take the A414 westbound, Maylands Avenue and Redbourn Road North and then east to the B487 then the A5183 (map 1).
• Traffic wishing to enter the M1 southbound will take the M1 northbound to junction 10, exit and return southbound.
• Local traffic will be diverted west on the A5183 to Luton Road, north on Luton Road and then Markyate Road to Front Street heading east and then south on to Half Moon Lane, then south on the A1081 London Road (map 2).
